2006 Waconia Midwest Ride In

January 28th-29th, 2005

Waconia, Minnesota

With great anticipation, my family headed to Waconia, Minnesota, for the Midwest Ride In sponsored by Midwest Vintage Snowmobile Shows, the Carver County Snowrunners, and the Westonka Snoblazers. Unseasonably high temperatures, rain, and thunderstorms managed to cancel the 11 mile trail ride and ice drag racing, but still couldn't dampen the spirits of vintage snowmobile enthusiasts as 1,000's of spectators gathered to celebrate the event touted as the the "World's Largest Vintage & Antique Snowmobile Show." An active swap meet, excellent food, silent auction, loud snowmobile contest, Saturday night banquet, and snowmobile show kept the crowd quite happy. Here are some pictures of sleds I saw at the event, starting first with the first ever 1973 Ski Doo Elite made:

Dennis Berning of Albertville, Minnesota, brought along a trio of Rupps including a super clean 1970 Sprint 34 pictured below. With the immense popularity of the racing sleds, it is refreshing to see such an impressive group of consumer trail sleds.

Here are a couple of custom sleds that I saw in the show. The sled on the left is a customized 1972 Massey Ferguson owned by Gary Bromley of Mantorville, Minnesota. This Massey sports a Rotax 440cc motor with twin stinger pipes.

The sled on the right is a customized 1971 Boa Ski crafted to look like a 250 Rupp Magnum. The Boa Ski still has it's original track, 250cc Hirth motor, and hood, and is owned by Scott Hermauer of De Pere, Wisconsin.

Right: 1971 Boa Ski Mark O / Rupp Magnum

I found this sled hanging out in the swap area. Don't know if it found a new home, but it sure was a nice sled.
