2007 Waconia Midwest Ride In
January 20th-21st, 2007
The Midwest Ride In, sponsored by Midwest Vintage Snowmobile Shows, the Carver County Snowrunners, and the Westonka Snoblazers is widely considered one of the premier events in vintage snowmobiling. Last year brought unseasonably high temperatures, rain, and thunderstorms, but this year temperatures hovered in the mid 20's with light snow on Sunday. Although warmer temps in early January managed to again cancel the ice drag racing and shorten the trail ride, most of the show was unaffected as thousands of spectators gathered to celebrate the "World's Largest Vintage & Antique Snowmobile Show." A showing of the movie "A Matter Of Winning" on Friday in a real movie theater really set the mood for a fantastic weekend of vintage sledding. On Saturday, spectators were able browse an active swap meet, sample a grilled pork chop, a radar run, and partake in the trail ride.
On Sunday, visitors were treated to a silent auction, more great food, and an excellent snowmobile show. Here is a picture from inside the ballroom featuring the silent auction and the vintage Arctic Cat display.
Here are some pictures of sleds I saw at the event, starting first with a spectacular Rupp 3rd Dimension brought by Glen Johnson of Moorhead, MN.

Chuck Moser or Wyoming MN and Jesse Babler of Becker, MN managed to create a complete picture of John Deere racing history by assembling all three of John Deere's most significant race sleds. If you look closely in the picture, you will even see a nice Sno*Jet Thunderjet on the far left.

Eldon Peterson of Swanburg, Minnesota, brought along a couple of 1976 Rupp Nitros including one, #184, which ran in the 1976 I-500 race. Eldon Peterson is Tom Peterson's uncle and was a Rupp dealer from 1972-1976. What's amazing is that these sleds are still in original condition!

Found in the Waconia Winner's circle from last year was a diverse collection of sleds, including a beautiful 1969 Hornet, a 1971 Ridge Runner, a 1964 Mathews Trailmaker, and a 1970 Arctic Panther, all of them in spectacular condition.

If you like the rare race stuff, here's a 1976 Skiroule 250 Sno Pro, owned by Jerry McGee of Whitefield, NH.

Scott Rick of Kellog, MN attended his first Waconia with his 1971 Merc Rocket, which he bought new out of the crate in 2000. Scott actually rides his sled every year.
